Paddling Pennsylvania Details

Pennsylvania may derive its name form its forests, and it may be famous for its rolling green mountains but it is really a land of rivers and creeks with more waterway miles than any state but Alaska. Pennsylvania's rivers and streams are known for their beauty. Some meander through pastoral countryside, while others cut through impressive canyons, water gaps, and gorges.

These waterways offer a glimpse to the past, with the many old canals, bridge abutments, covered bridges, viaducts, and even forgotten towns that lie along their routes. Simply put, Pennsylvania offers some of the finest paddling in the country. Whether you want to paddle the massive Susquehanna or the intimate Tionesta, the vast Lake Erie or the hidden wilderness of Shumans Lake, you will find it all in the Keystone State.

This guide includes:

  • Sizeable flatwater rivers and streams, although riffles and rapids exist on many of the rivers and streams covered. This is not a guide to whitewater rivers and creeks.
  • Industrialized rivers or those open to heavy commercial traffic are generally not included.
  • Many lakes and ponds are also covered, but only those that are open to the public and featuring scenic value and limited shoreline development.
  • An overview description of each river, creek, lake, or pond is provided.
  • This guide is organized by watersheds. The reason being that rivers and streams cross political and regional boundaries that makes organizing a guide by those criteria difficult.

Praise For Paddling Pennsylvania
"Paddling Pennsylvania is a wonderfully comprehensive guide highlighting some of the most beautiful, serene waterways in the country. Whether you plan to spend a day or a week on the river, all you need is your gear, a friend, and this book to prepare for a paddling adventure that is sure to make memories that will last a lifetime."
  --Wayne Dickert, National champion paddler

Paddling Pennsylvania is an excellent resource - Oct 18, 2010
Reviewer: Carole McIntyre from Waynesburg, PA

Last summer I took up kayaking. Now, with all the fervor of the newly-converted, I want to bring the word to others, and Paddling Pennsylvania is an excellent tool for both my own paddling, and as a lever to persuade others to consider this.

When I saw that Paddling Pennsylvania was available, I ordered it, and have been really pleased with it. It lists and describes many possibilities, telling how to get to them, the general level of difficulty, (can I do this without getting into trouble?) and giving information about scenery and fishing. Grouped by river watersheds, accompanied by maps which locate the waterways for selection, telling where to put in and take out, Paddling Pennsylvania is going to point me toward meeting watery friends for years to come.

I wish Mr. Mitchell would add the Cheat between the Mon and the dam at Lake Lynn, accessible by a public put-in at Point Marion. It's a very pleasant paddle, about six miles round-trip,most between forested shores. Also in the Monongahela River watershed is the lower Ten Mile Creek, navigable by kayak or canoe for about three miles upstream from a public put-in at Clarksville.

These are quiet paddles, good for beginners like me to learn on. If I, at 68, can do it, pretty much anyone can, and Paddling Pennsylvania is a fountain of good information for both a beginner and someone more accomplished.
