Read the first few chapters - Apr 29, 2011

| I had seen the author in 'WildWater' & was touched by how eloquently he put into words the feelings & emotions that saturate you while paddling. I've only read the first few chapters of this book and find that it can mentally put you into you boat on the river while you're sitting on the couch during a snow storm. It will remind you of the emotions and challenges you faced as a new boater and give you perspective on how far you've come and how far you want to go in boating. If you love to kayak or want to love to kayak this is a book for you. |

Whitewater Philosophy rocks! - Nov 15, 2010

I got this book last year. I agree with some of what Brent says but not with the last thing he says.
Agree: the book is awesome! If you want some provocative sh*t to think about, buy it. Doug’s done the sh*t and he writes betterthan anybody else. I read the book twice and will read it again. It’s the best book on kayaking, no comparison. Helped me see why I like paddling so much. Helped me explain to my girlfriend and parents.
Disagreements. Brett’s comment about “it’s apparent how highly he regards himself”. Weird. I don't get that one. Probly brett’s got some issues about fear and being good. Mayeb he wants to be good but is scared. Chill out man. Just paddle to have fun. And read what’s there cause it'll help you.
Fear: Brett gets stuck on fear and elite paddlers – that’s not what’s talked about! It’s about where fear comes from, how easy it is to get frightening in kayaking. There’s some interesting difference about fear that comes from true dangers, and fear that comes from what we don’t know. At the end, there’s suggestions for how to deal with fear. I’ve used some of them with acouple friends who were starting, and it helps a lot. Tried some too myself. It works for any whitewater paddler, not just elites.
There's like 25 other articles - lots and lots of stuff. The the first article “why I kayak”? You can give this to ANYBODY to show them the sport. Or the ‘real measure of skill’? anybody can apply that and get way better. Beginner’s mind, that’s about seeing fun even in simple whitewater. Soloing in easy and hard whitewater. “Zanshin” – martial arts in kayaking. Who out there talks about things like that? Nobody. All great S**t There's two great stories at the end. the one about the otter is awesome.
I rate it 5++. I’d recommend the book to anybody. If you love 2 paddle, you’ll love this book.

Interesting Read - Nov 10, 2010

If you're a whitewater boater and you're looking for a thought provoking read...well this is it. Doug Ammons probes the depths of the psychology of running whitewater.
And the philosophies that he explores are more thought provoking than you might expect. I especially found his take on fear very interesting. In the end I understand that his philosophy on fear is probably shared by many elite whitewater boaters.
However, it seems to me that most rational intermediate to expert kayakers have fear and won't get past it. That's probably the thing that keeps them from being an elite whitewater kayaker. It's also what probably keeps them alive.
I read the entire book and will probably read several chapters again. I rated it a 4 because there are many instances where it's apparent how highly he regards himself. And that got annoying. But it does give the reader a glimpse of the mindset required to run the hardest whitewater in the world.
