Sunk Without a Sound Details

Sunk Without A Sound is the riveting tale of the search for Glen and Bessie Hyde.

Glen and Bessie Hyde began their honeymoon trip down the Green and Colorado Rivers on October 20, 1928. A month later they hiked to the rim of Grand Canyon, resupplied, and returned to their boat. When they did not arrive at trip's end, Glen's father launched an exhaustive search of lower Grand Canyon. The Hyde's crude Idaho Sweep scow was found in calm water, fully loaded. But Glen and Bessie had vanished without a trace. So began the greatest mystery in the annals of whitewater navigation.

More than forty years later, in 1971, an older woman on a Grand Canyon river trip announced she was Bessie Hyde. She said she had stabbed Glen, hiked out, and started life anew. In 1976 a skeleton thought to be Glen Hyde's was found at the canyon rim with a bullet in the skull. Since then, another suspected Glen and another Bessie have appeared, further convoluting the myth of the Hydes.

Author and boatman Brad Dimock searched the country for the true store of the Hydes. He followed each story and obscure lead to its end, even going to the extreme of recreating the Hydes' archaic craft for a harrowing trip through Grand Canyon with his own bride.

Great book - Nov 17, 2010
Reviewer: Carol B. from S.F. Cali
I agree with the other review that the writing in this book could have used a little tighter editing. But the story is super intriguing and if you've ever been down The Grand, it just lends to the mystique.

Must read on the Grand Canyon - May 27, 2010
Reviewer: Clare Loxley from Taos, New Mexico
The writing in this book can at times be a bit stagnant but overall the story is filled with mystique and intrigue. It is the perfect book to take on a Grand Canyon trip as you twist through the exact same canyon walls as Glen and Bessie Hyde did on their honeymoon trip on the Colorado River. They left in the fall of 1928 in a wooden sweep boat with no life jackets and the dream of adventure. What happened next is a mystery, as they never returned. Did they hike out? Was Bessie having an affair? If you've been down the Grand or are going down the Grand - it's a must read.

Intriguing Read - Nov 13, 2009
Reviewer: Jim Haskell from Atlanta GA

I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. The story of Glen and Bessie Hyde is filled with mystery. Imagining what it must have been like to run whitewater with gear and apparel from the 1920's was intersting.

In addition the way the author takes you down the Grand Canyon, the Salmon River and the Middle Fork Salmon with Glen and Bessie and with their own recreations was really fun. Especially if you've been down any of those rivers.

I totally recommend this book. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 4 is that at points it's a little dry with lots of facts. But as it's a sort of history book, all of the facts are necessary to make the research seem credible.
