Great book - Nov 17, 2010

| I agree with the other review that the writing in this book could have used a little tighter editing. But the story is super intriguing and if you've ever been down The Grand, it just lends to the mystique. |

Must read on the Grand Canyon - May 27, 2010

The writing in this book can at times be a bit stagnant but overall the story is filled with mystique and intrigue. It is the perfect book to take on a Grand Canyon trip as you twist through the exact same canyon walls as Glen and Bessie Hyde did on their honeymoon trip on the Colorado River. They left in the fall of 1928 in a wooden sweep boat with no life jackets and the dream of adventure. What happened next is a mystery, as they never returned. Did they hike out? Was Bessie having an affair? If you've been down the Grand or are going down the Grand - it's a must read.

Intriguing Read - Nov 13, 2009

I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. The story of Glen and Bessie Hyde is filled with mystery. Imagining what it must have been like to run whitewater with gear and apparel from the 1920's was intersting.
In addition the way the author takes you down the Grand Canyon, the Salmon River and the Middle Fork Salmon with Glen and Bessie and with their own recreations was really fun. Especially if you've been down any of those rivers.
I totally recommend this book. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 4 is that at points it's a little dry with lots of facts. But as it's a sort of history book, all of the facts are necessary to make the research seem credible. |
